Know the Root of Knowledge – Defining – The Basis of Critical Reasoning

Bismillah! Al-Hamdulillah!

Knowledge finds its Root in Defining:

The Ayah 2:31

And He taught Adam the names – all of them. Then He showed them to the angels and said, “Inform Me of the names of these, if you are truthful.”

Ibne Abbas commented on this Ayah that

“(And He taught Adam all the names), the names of all his progeny, or the names of all the beasts and other things, including a cooking pot, a plate and saucer”

Tafseer Ibne Abbas (Ayah 2:31)

“Ad-Dahhāk said that Ibn Abbās commented on the Āyah, “And He taught Ādam all the names (of everything)”, stating that it refers to, “the names that people use, such as human, animal, sky, earth, land, sea, horse, donkey, and so forth, including the names of the other species.”

Ibn Abī Hātim and Ibn Jarīr reported that ‘Āsim bn. Kulayb narrated from Sa’īd bn Mabad that someone asked Ibn Abbās, “Did Allāh teach him the names of the plate and the pot” He said, “Yes, and even the TERMS for breaking wind!”

Allāh taught Ādam the names of everything, their proper names, the names of their characteristics, and what they do, just as Ibn Abbās stated about the terms for passing gas.”

Tafseer Ibn Kathīr (Ayah 2:31)

SubhanAllah!
These statements show the importance of Defining.
Defining of names, terms and concepts as that’s what constitutes the Knowledge.
It is what the knowledge based on, the ability to Define correctly.
The ability to name and Defining things,
not only the objects but ideas and concepts also form the basis of knowledge.
That’s how knowledge is rooted in the ability to Defining.

The Harm of lacking in the ability to Define – Few Examples”

And SubhanAllah! On the other hand, if you observe the people of Bida’a closely,
you would notice that simply the lack of ability in Defining an Ayah or a Hadith or a text is one of the main reasons of falling them into Bida’a.
And who does Bida’a! The Ebadh of Allah, those who are sincere in Ebadah!
SubhanAllah!
Then, what makes them do something that could cause to burn them into the fire?
(May Allah guide us and save us from fire)
Simply, the lack of the ability to Critical Reasoning.
And Defining things correctly is what forms the base of Critical Reasoning ability.

Not only it is the cause of Bida’a, if you research the reason of emerging the groups and sects,
you would find its roots, again, in the inability of correct Defining.
And then you might think that’s all.
But no!
You will be astonished to know how the lack of ability to Define (Critical Reasoning) is responsible in resulting wrong Ebadah by pious Ebadh of Allah while you call it ‘Difference of Opinion’ but actually it is the lack of ability to Reason in many cases.

Such few examples are when to ‘Recite Sura Fatiha’ behind the Imam,
‘Praying of Tahyatul Masjid’ at the prohibited times,
And many other matters of Deen which you are often confused about.
The inability of Critical Reasoning is as such that let alone the regular Muslims,
in fact, the vast majority of Ulema do not understand the difference between Mu’min and Muslim as to how they apply it.
That’s how grave the situation of the Muslim Ummah!
Only because they lack Critical Reasoning.
Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilahi Rajun.

The Basis of Knowledge – Critical Reasoning:

The Ayah 2:33

He said, “O Adam, inform them of their names.”
And when he had informed them of their names,
He said, “Did I not tell you that I know the unseen [aspects] of the heavens and the earth?
And I know what you reveal and what you have concealed.”

And what’s the basis of his knowledge?
Naming of things and Defining of TERMS that Allah taught him! SubhanAllah!
Do you understand this, really?
The ability to define things is what forms the knowledge.
And the ability to Define things is what Critical Reasoning is all about.
Critical Reasoning prepares you for your ability to Define things.

This is what Critical Reasoning based on, Defining.
This is the basis of understanding and contemplating on the Quran.
This is the basis of Critical Reasoning.
This is what ‘Quran for Critical Reasoning’ based on.
It is, Defining.

And Allah knows best.
May Allah give us a proper understanding of Deen
May Allah make us a Ummah of knowledge!
